Pokémon 151 price guide: Charizard ex and the cards worth keeping

The 151 Charizard ex sells for about £248 in the UK. One of every card in the set is around £1,500. Here's what the chase cards really go for, from real UK sales.

The card everyone wants from 151 is the Charizard ex special illustration rare (199/165). It sells for about £248 raw in the UK, from 12 recent eBay UK sales.

One of every 151 card adds up to around £1,500 raw. That's a lot less than Prismatic Evolutions or Evolving Skies, and the chase is spread over a few cards instead of one.

The special illustration rares

The set's special illustration rares are the original Kanto favourites, and three of them are the starters.

Card UK price (raw) UK sales
Charizard ex 199/165 £248 12
Blastoise ex 200/165 £90 7
Venusaur ex 198/165 £72 12
Zapdos ex 202/165 £72 4
Alakazam ex 201/165 £53 15

Charizard is worth nearly three Blastoises. That's normal for a Charizard, but it's a bigger gap than you see in most sets.

Alakazam is the busy one. 15 UK sales in our data, more than any other chase card in the set, at around £53. If you want a 151 special illustration rare that's easy to sell on, it's a good sign when a card trades that often.

The illustration rares

The cheaper art cards are where 151 gets fun. The starter line sells well:

Squirtle selling above Charmander surprised me. It's only 6 UK sales against Charmander's 3, so don't treat that as settled, but it's worth a look on the card pages.

Sealed 151 has run away from the singles

Here's the bit that stands out. The 151 Elite Trainer Box sells for about £415 sealed (23 UK sales), and the Ultra Premium Collection for about £700 (17 sales). Next to the singles, people are paying a lot for unopened 151.

How we price these cards

UK prices are the middle of real eBay UK sold listings, with fakes, lots, graded copies and other languages taken out. Where UK sales are thin, we use Cardmarket and TCGplayer, converted to pounds each morning. Check the card pages for today's numbers.
